Skinny Water!?

I have one basic “food rule” that I try to follow (ok, more than one, but this one is important): if I can’t pronounce a word in the ingredient list, I try to steer clear of the product.

In the locker room today at the gym, someone had left a bottle of “Skinny Water” near the showers. Of course the name intrigued me, so I couldn’t resist the temptation to pick up this bottle and look at the proclaimed nutrients, chemicals, etc. It breaks my rule…I don’t know how to pronounce this–”EGCG (Epigallocatechin gallate)” or this..”Cyanocobalamin.”

Further, WHY does such a thing EXIST?! Really?! What’s wrong with regular tap-or filtered- water? If we eat well and stay hydrated, exercise, and rest well, there shouldn’t be a need for a drink that super-charges our metabolism and revs our bodily engines.

More than the actual ingredients & promising powers, I’m irritated by the name. We have gone to great lengths to turn our bodies into something they were never meant to be. We were not created to be super-women (I am stereotyping in saying ‘women’) who sleep 5 hours a night, hydrate with lattes and “skinny water,” work full-time, and solve everyone’s problems. Very few women are a size 4…and have the bone structure to be that size..so, why the striving? Now I’m not suggesting “letting yourself go”…as exercise & healthy eating have their place. But I wonder, at what point will we be content with our bodies–when we lose 5,10, 50 pounds or tone that one problem area? Really, you think that will solve the contentment problem? It won’t–your inner critic won’t magically go away–you must take hold of it and discipline it. It’s easy to get addicted to this “If-only-I-lose-5-pounds-”mindset; remember though, impairment begins with the first “drink.”

Photobooth phun

Sara and I had the awesome privilege of attending one of the coolest weddings ever last night. And I’m not just saying that because my family was so involved (dad did the ceremony, mom did the Pacman cake, Faith was the matron of honor, Dave Ralph the photog, Mike Ralph the photobooth master).

I’ve never before been to a wedding where 1. Ugly Dolls dressed as bride and groom came down the aisle on a remote control car 2. Shel Silverstein was used as one of the readings 3. Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet was played as the wedding party entered 4. The bride and groom showed up at the reception on roller skates 5. There was an entire table of candy 6. The centerpieces were flowers in test tube drying racks and the markers were elements from the periodic table and 7. Several other things I’m forgetting.

Thanks Loreli and Ed for being such super fun and creative people.

Shamrock Smoothies

It took a few more drops of food coloring than I expected, but we managed to turn our smoothies green. Happy St. Patrick’s Day to us!

Dinner at Spyro Gyros in Lancaster. Platters bigger than your head for a price small enough to fit the budget.

In the backyard during the Blizzard of 2010, moments before falling over trying to walk to the shed to get a snow shovel.

Mascott basketball at the Temple U. basketball game. It was the Owl’s birthday so he brought a bunch of his friends with him, including a weird purple furry looking thing with no arms who was more or less helpless in the game.

We went into the 30th Street Station McDonald’s looking for hot chocolate and couldn’t resist the Shamrock Shake.

The New Kid in Class…

A friend once told me that everyone likes the “new kid in class.” Tonight I have proved that this isn’t always so! I’ve been trying to expand my “exercise horizons” lately by steering clear of running and working on other muscle groups (you know, this incredible thing fitness gurus push called “cross-training”). And, I have been making slow progress in this.

So, since I didn’t go into the office today, I thought I would check out the group classes at the gym on Thursday nights. Spinning…excellent choice. My friend Chelsea & I have talked about this spinning phenomenon recently, and I thought I’d stay true to my “new horizons” kick. Allow me to recap the experience for you: I get into class…and there are maybe 6 people already on bikes, all of them decked out in -real- riding gear. (And, well, I’m not.) Of course, all of the bikes were taken…and so, I attempted to drag one over from the opposite wall. One woman could tell I was struggling and asked, “Are you new here?” Ha. What gave it away? Oh, but let’s talk about the instructor…because she is the motivating factor behind this post. She was quite condescending to the “new girl” and even made passive aggressive comments during the workout, sneaking a quick look at me!

After five minutes, I’m ready to be done. It was boring, and I was fantasizing about running on the treadmill…(so, you can imagine how those 5 minutes went). The whole time I’m wanting to scream, “THIS IS SO STUPID…AND I AM A RUNNER! DON’T YOU TALK TO ME LIKE THAT!” I wanted to tell the whole class that their “sport” is stupid, and I’m really not incompetent, I’m just used to standing up to exercise. The condescension came to a halt until the end of class when the instructor “reminded” me to clean off my bike with anti-bacterial wipes. Really?

So, on my chilly walk home through the snow, I started thinking…why was I so desiring approval from people in the spinning class? Why did I want them to know that I’m really not gym-illiterate? In fact, why do I desire approval from so many people– my co-workers, my friends, my family, my husband, and now…people I don’t even know from a can of paint! What is it in me that lacks the confidence, the self-differentiation, and at some point, the emotional boundaries? Do we ever reach a  point in our lives in which we are confident in our abilities–both professionally & personally –and therefore, not feel the need to have others approve? For me, this requires a lot of prayer & a lot of re-programming of my brain!

Spinning: fail. Next week I will have to try something new…hopefully it won’t leave me longing for the treadmill. :)

Love surrounds us

it is good to come together
in our friendship to remember
all the reasons hope is in our hearts

hallelujah hallelujah
Christ our joy and strength
hallelujah hallelujah
Christ our joy and strength

Listening to Sara Groves on the way home from my gramma’s house today, Sara and I talked about the 12 months that have passed since we last celebrated Christmas with our family and how blessed we are to be where we’re at right now – both working and living closer to family.

It in these times we spend with loved ones that it is so clear how blessed we are and how good we have it to be so surrounded by love.

Unfortunately, today has also been a reminder of how so often in life there are more questions than answers. My friend CJ slipped on some ice yesterday while delivering a package for UPS and suffered severe trauma to his head and lower back. Last I heard, he was still in intensive care in a drug-induced coma. On an even more tragic note, we also learned this morning that a family friend decided to take his own life.

Through it all, I take comfort in the words of Sara Groves when she sings, “Christ our joy and strength.” It’s not for nothing that in spite of all the craziness of life there is hope in our hearts.

Merry Christmas.

Mustache girl

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMcRjATneqY&hl=en&fs=1]

Keeping with the in-law theme of my last post, I’m going to give another shout out to my awesome distant in-laws, the Kellers. This video more or less sums up my Thanksgiving experience this year. I use a personal pronoun because Sara was in the other room. The wives turn their backs on Bill Keller and me for a minute and next thing you know we’re writing a theme song for a female Mii character with a mustache. Mason caught on fast because he RULES! (Love, Max)

The hat that lights up our lives

Perhaps you have heard horror stories before about in-laws. I don’t have any stories to tell. My in-laws rule. Instead, I have fun stories to tell about the cool things they get me like my Kobalt hat equipped with LED lights in the brim. The hat was a belated birthday present from the Phillipys who gave it to me when we visited with them after they got back from a trip to Italy. The first thing I saw when I opened the box was a picture of a guy with a hunting rifle so I was super confused. Was my father-in-law trying to get me to go hunting with him?

Once I figured out what it actually was and was for I was like a little kid on Christmas morning saying “just what I needed” all over again. Now, when Sara and I go for walks in the dark we don’t have to worry about tripping over cracks in the sidewalk. And if and when I need to fix anything in tight spaces where light is limited, no longer will I have to try to put a flashlight in my mouth.

How cool is that?

Birthday road trip, part deux

newseum

Continuing in our tradition of going away the weekend between our birthdays (we went to St. Louis a year ago), Sara and I went to Maryland and Washington D.C. for the weekend. We stayed in a beautiful old bed and breakfast (Longwood Bed and Breakfast in Brookeville, Md.) that was once home to the man who invented the first refrigerator. We had a wonderful time there, once we figured out that we were indeed in the right place (it was tucked away in a cul de sac of an otherwise generic housing development).

On Saturday, I got an early birthday present when we took the Metro into D.C. to go to the Newseum. The museum was great, but what was especially cool was getting to sit in on the taping of an episode of The Future of News, a program that will debut on PBS in January. The discussion for this hour-long episode was on citizen journalism with guests Jay Rosen (New York University) and Clarence Page (Chicago Tribune). The above picture is of us with the set in the background.

We followed up our Newseum visit with a quick tour of the city, including a trip to the mall where we took a look at the eco-friendly houses that were part of the Eco Decatholon. Once back at our home Thomas Jefferson was known to frequent, we ate leftover birthday cake and watched the news.

The trip ended today with a stop-over in B-more, where Sara had to endure my endless chatter about The Wire and put up with me taking pictures of the pier where the Homicide: Life on the Street production was based. We also toured an old lighthouse (shown in an episode of The Wire), ate crab cakes for the first time, saw some pirates and got to go on a Dutch naval ship before departing.
